According to Deloitte's "2012 Top Five Total Rewards Priorities Survey”, companies looking to restructure health and group benefit plans throughout 2012 will focus their attention on employee wellness. Conducted in December 2011, the survey targeted 330 online participants who represent a diverse cross-section of the U.S.-based employer population by industry and size.
Eighty-two percent of survey respondents plan to redesign some or all of their health and group benefit plans throughout 2012. The largest area of focus will be redesigning active employee medical plans (82 percent), with employee wellness and/or disease management programs following closely behind (67 percent). From the survey results, “The focus on employee wellness is second only to redesign of active employee medical plans where the most levers exist to influence cost. As noted, wellness and disease management programs are gaining increased attention and momentum. This is due in large part to the recognition that health and risk are correlated, and that employers own the risk, even if they choose to self-insure their health care plans. By reducing risk via prevention, early detection and chronic condition management, employers realize they can impact the health care cost trend.”
The results of this survey show most companies are taking initiatives to restructure benefits for a wide range of offerings. According to the survey, redesigning employee medical plans will receive the most attention, with wellness and/or disease management programs also being put in the spotlight.
