In a recent article, TheBostonChannel explores the growing popularity of a treadmill desk that allows employees to work and exercise simultaneously. These new height-adjustable work stations are said to boost overall health and productivity for employees; for this reason, a number of companies have already begun using them, including Blue Cross Blue Shield and TripAdvisor.
According to Jason Robart, Blue Cross Blue Shield Chief Human Resources Director, employees using the new desks are more alert, have more energy, and are in better shape physically. One TripAdvisor employee reports, "I think it's changing the way I feel. It helps with back pain and it improves posture."
For Blue Cross Blue Shield, treadmill desks have become so popular that employees have to book them in advance. “It's great when you are starting to feel lethargic in the middle of the day,” reports one employee. “If there's a spot available, you jump on and it energizes you and helps you keep focused.”
Standing during the work day both increases blood flow and oxygen to the brain and decreases stress, studies show. For the future, companies looking to promote workplace productivity and overall satisfaction may want to consider offering the new treadmill desks to their employees.
